What is Chincoteague Pony Penning Week? 2026 Guide, Schedule + Why It’s Worth the Trip

Wild Chincoteague ponies swimming across the Assateague Channel during Pony Penning Week with crowds gathered along the shore.

Every summer, something truly special happens on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Wild ponies move across the island, crowds gather along the shoreline, and Chincoteague Island comes alive with one of its most beloved traditions.

In July 2026, the island celebrates the 101st Annual Chincoteague Pony Penning Week, a week-long series of events that blends history, community, and coastal adventure into one unforgettable experience.

The excitement builds throughout the week, beginning with the Southern Herd Roundup, followed by the Northern Herd Roundup and the unique Beach Walk, where ponies are guided along the Atlantic shoreline to join together. From there, all eyes turn to the main event – the Pony Swim – before wrapping up with the Pony Auction and the return swim back to Assateague Island.

Alongside these traditions, visitors can also enjoy the Chincoteague Carnival, which runs throughout much of July and adds even more fun to the island atmosphere.

Whether you’re planning a family vacation, an RV getaway, your first visit to Chincoteague, or your returning for another year, Pony Penning Week is the perfect time to book a stay at Tom’s Cove Park and be close to it all – just minutes from the action and surrounded by the natural beauty of the island.

What is Chincoteague Pony Penning Week?

Chincoteague Pony Penning Week is a more than 100-year-old tradition that celebrates the island’s connection to the famous wild ponies of Assateague Island.

The event was founded in 1924 by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company to raise funds for fire equipment while also managing the wild pony population on Assateague Island

Every July, local “Saltwater Cowboys” round up the wild ponies and guide them across the channel to Chincoteague Island. What began as a practical way to manage the herd has grown into one of the most unique and celebrated coastal events in the country.

Today, Pony Penning Week brings together history, wildlife, and community through a full week of unforgettable experiences and can’t-miss events.

2026 Chincoteague Pony Penning Week Schedule, Events & Dates

The week unfolds as a series of connected events, each building up to the iconic Pony Swim.

Saturday, July 25 – Southern Herd Roundup (Assateague Island) (7:00am)
The first major event of the week. The “Saltwater Cowboys” ride out to the southern end of Assateague Island to round up more than 50 ponies and foals and guide them into the Southern Corral.

Where to Watch: Visitors can watch the ponies arrive along Beach Road, and the herd remains at the Southern Corral through Tuesday for viewing and photos.

Sunday, July 26 – Northern Herd Roundup (6:00am)
The northern end of Assateague Island, VA is home to the largest population of ponies and their foals, about 100 to 150 total. The “Saltwater Cowboys” herd this group into the Northern Corral.

Due to the northern end of the island not being accessible, this roundup is not seen by the public.

Monday, July 27 – Beach Walk Experience (6:00am)

One of the most scenic and lesser-known highlights of the week. The northern herd is released at daybreak and guided along the Atlantic shoreline to join the southern herd.

Where to Watch: Visitors can watch from Assateague Island National Seashore. Arriving early is recommended for parking.

Pro Tip: Bring beach gear and plan to stay for the morning, or walk behind the ponies to the corral. Bikers and hikers can access the beach via Swan Cove Trail.

Tuesday, July 28 – Vet Checks & Buyback Selection (9:00am)
Before the swim, veterinarians check the health of the ponies at the Southern Corral.

Where to Watch: Visitors are welcome to observe during this process. Parking is available at the Woodland Trail lot.

Wednesday, July 29 – Pony Swim (Slack Tide Window: 7:00am – 1:00pm)
The main event. At slack tide, the ponies swim across the Assateague Channel to Chincoteague Island, led by the Saltwater Cowboys.

Where to Watch: Viewing takes place near Pony Swim Lane, just south of Veteran’s Memorial Park.

Important tips:

  • Arrive early – well before the tide window
  • Wear closed-toe shoes or boots (the area can be muddy)
  • No parking is allowed at Veteran’s Memorial Park
  • Free shuttle service is available from the Municipal Center

For a unique perspective, visitors can also book charter boats or kayak tours, but these fill up quickly so make sure to plan ahead.

After the swim, the ponies rest before parading to the carnival grounds on Main Street. That evening, the first foal to reach shore – named King or Queen Neptune – is raffled off at the carnival.

Thursday, July 30 – Pony Auction at Chincoteague Carnival Grounds (8:00am)
Held at the carnival grounds, the auction supports the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and the care of the ponies.

Some foals are sold, while others are designated as “buybacks” and returned to the herd. Winners of buyback ponies even get to name them, making this one of the most popular events of the week.

More information about the auction can be found here

Friday, July 31 – Pony Swim Back to Assateague Island
The adult ponies are guided back across the channel to Assateague Island, where they will remain for the year.

The northern herd is transported back after the auction, while the southern herd completes the return pony swim – bringing the week full circle.

Chincoteague Carnival (Throughout July)
The Chincoteague Carnival is a big part of the Pony Penning Week experience, and a favorite for families and visitors of all ages. Hosted by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, the 101st Annual Carnival runs on select dates throughout July, including Pony Penning Week, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM nightly.

Expect a fun, laid-back island atmosphere filled with food, games, rides, and live entertainment. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a day of events or keep the fun going into the evening.

You’ll find a wide variety of classic carnival eats and local favorites, including oyster and clam fritters, soft crab and crab cake sandwiches, fish sandwiches, burgers, pizza, pony fries, funnel cakes, fried Oreos, and soft serve ice cream.

There are rides and games for all ages, plus live entertainment at the bandstand and even Bingo if you’re feeling lucky.

All carnival proceeds benefit the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, making it a fun way to support a long-standing island tradition while you’re in town.

Make sure to check the official schedule as the event approaches for any updates.
